Linda Jean Mettlen, a beloved housewife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, in Mont Belvieu, Texas. Born on April 22, 1943, in Kosse, Texas, Linda dedicated her life to family, crafting a legacy filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Throughout her life, Linda was known for her unwavering loyalty to her family. She was a loving mother to her daughters, Rita Wheeler (Albert) and Nita Pestlen (Patrick), and her sons, Daron Mettlen and Steven Mettlen (Deedra). Her connection with her children extended far beyond the traditional bounds; she instilled in them her love of reading and music, nurturing their interests and passions. Linda was immensely proud of ensuring that all her children finished high school and graduated, a testament to her dedication and drive.
As a grandmother, Linda touched the lives of her grandchildren with warmth and affection, creating moments they would carry with them always. Family gatherings were central to her life, where she thrived on hosting dinners and sharing her culinary skill, particularly her renowned potato salad, a dish that became a staple at family celebrations.
Her kindness and caring heart were evident as she took care of her mother during her illness, a reflection of the love she held for her own family. Linda was not only a firm but fair mother; her dry sense of humor and spirit kept those around her on their toes and forever brought a smile to their faces.
An excellent seamstress, Linda often lent her talents to her children’s activities, getting involved in her daughter’s Girl Scout and FHA endeavors, and she was a fervent supporter of Daron's and Steven's sports interests. Her engagement in their lives showcased her belief in encouraging their pursuits and fostering their growth.
Linda is also remembered for the joy she found in visiting with friends and her infectious passion for cooking. A sense of community and friendship was vital to her, as she created countless memories that will be fondly remembered by those who were fortunate enough to know her.
She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 52 years, John Mettlen, along with her parents, Nathan Holton and Jim and Ima Ruth Robinson Cranford, grandsons, Codie Mettlen, and Jared Wheeler, and her daughter-in-law, Sherry Mettlen, siblings, Floyd Robinett, Doyle Robinett, Virginia Cranford Wheeler, James Cranford, Thomas Cranford, Edith Cranford-Cook, Charles Cranford, Clifton Cranford and Bill Cranford.
Linda is survived by her daughters, Rita Wheeler (Albert) and Nita Pestlen (Patrick), and her sons, Daron Mettlen and Steven Mettlen (Deedra); grandchildren, Katrina Powell (TJ), (great grandson) Zackery Powell, Caleb Mettlen (Holley), Cory Mettlen, Erika Wheeler (great grandchildren) Dana, James and Marcus Whitworth, Jared Wheeler, and Addilyn RaeAnne Pond; stepsister, Dorothy Dreyer; brother-in-law, Leon Wheeler; numerous nieces and nephews.
Honoring Linda as pallbearers are Caleb Mettlen, Cory Mettlen, Zackery Powell, Brandon Perew, Dane Robinett, and James Whitworth. Honorary pallbearers are Marcus Whitworth, and Kyler Sanders.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Moss Hill Assembly of God Church, 14877 N. Hwy 146, Liberty, Texas, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM officiated by Pastor David Starks. Interment will follow at Moss Hill Cemetery.
Linda Jean Mettlen will be deeply missed by her family and friends. As we gather to honor her life, we are reminded of the love, laughter, and warmth she brought to our lives, forever etched in our hearts.
